VOICES FOR MARRIAGE
Points to consider

Suggestion: Choose the ones YOU are passionate about and communicate your thoughts on those.

  1. Marriage is the foundational relationship in every society and has been from the beginning up to now.
  2. A vote for benefits for unmarried partners is a vote against upholding the institution of marriage.
  3. Council Members serve not only by virtue of election by the voters in their district but also by the permissive will of God. As Psalm 75:6-7 states, promotion comes not from the east or the west but from the Lord God.
  4. Council Members have an ethical opportunity and moral responsibility to uphold the institution of marriage in their actions.
  5. Do we want our council member to vote against marriage? (Ask the audience)
  6. We who serve constituencies (Council members, Pastors, City Mgr.) will ultimately have to answer to the One who instituted marriage.
  7. A better use of the $300,000 would be: for (pick your top priorities) additional police, library books and materials, Big Brothers & Big Sisters Program, Animal Care Services, sidewalks, Sr. Centers, street maintenance, graffiti cleanup, swimming pools open more days each week during the hot summer months.
  8. If the $300,000 was divided up between the ten districts and your council member had $30,000 in additional discretionary funds, would providing benefits for unmarried domestic partners be YOUR top priority? (Ask the audience.)
  9. Is this YOUR top priority? (Look at your council member.) I certainly hope not!
  10. This looks like a "let's fly under the radar" sneaky ploy to avoid a public outcry like that of January, 1998 when hundreds of concerned citizens packed the Council Chamber to express their opposition.
  11. The citizenry emphatically said “NO!” in January, 1998. Let the people vote before doing it now.
  12. This ignores and defies the will of the people expressed loudly and clearly in January, 1998.
  13. Let the people vote on it.
  14. The assertion that it’s difficult to hire qualified, talented persons without such benefits is difficult to believe. In these days of unemployment, one would expect at least dozens of highly qualified applicants for each open position.
  15. ( Point(s) of your own that you care deeply about.)
